Vocabulary: Fall List #3

accolade: any award, honor, or laudatory notice
No amount of accolades could compare to self satisfaction.

acerbity: sourness, with roughness or astringency of taste
The acerbity of the medicine made him gag.

attrition: a wearing down or weakening of resistance, esp. as a result of continuous pressure
The war of attrition left both sides weary.

bromide: a platitude or trite saying, a person who is platitudinous and boring
The bromide laden speech put students to sleep.

chauvinist: a person who is aggressively and blindly patriotic or sexist
In most civilized places, chauvinism is among the most despicable of qualities.

chronic: constant, habitual; occurring a long time or recurring frequently
He found the chronic headaches crippling to everyday activities.

expound: to explain; set forth or state in detail
After the subject was expounded, the students were able to comprehend it.

factionalism: the state of being partisan or self-interested (factional)
He was disgusted by the superficial factionalism in his supposedly united country.

immaculate: free from spot or stain; free from moral blemish
Her track record was immaculate.  Too immaculate.

imprecation: the act of cursing; or the curse itself
Upon discovering the betrayal, he uttered a terrible imprecation.

ineluctable: incapable of being evaded, inescapable
End of the year finals are an ineluctable and terrible parts of life.

mercurial: volatile, fickle, flighty; animated, lively, quick-witted
The ability of mercurial speech was much valued in the debate club.

palliate: to relieve or lessen without curing
He attempted to palliate his mournful companion, but the empty words didn't help.

protocol: the customs and regulations dealing with etiquette (often diplomatic)
Protocol was strictly enforced in the laboratory.

resplendent: shining brilliantly; gleaming
Fresh out of the box, the computer case was resplendent.

stigmatize: to set some mark of disgrace or infamy upon
To go against the group's opinion meant instant stigmatization.

sub rosa: confidentially; secretly
Due to the sensitive nature of the issue, they decided to discuss it sub rosa.

vainglory: boastful vanity
For all his merits, vainglory was ultimately his downfall.

vestige:  a mark or trace of something that is no longer in existence
Besides the vestiges of a house, the fire left nothing behind.

volition: the power of will, choice
Although drafted, the soldiers fought of their own volition.
